The Edison K-8 is an environmental science school and an outdoor classroom in their schoolyard helps provide hands-on science learning opportunities for its students. The Edison K-8 project serves 750 children daily. 80% of the students receive free or reduced lunch, and 20% are English language learners with families newly arrived from places as diverse as Morocco, Nepal and Somalia. While many schools are reducing time for recess, even eliminating it entirely for middle school children, the Edison is bucking the trend and adding recess for students in grades 6, 7 and 8.
